Create a Themed Season with Your Christmas Decorations
Seven unique themed decorating schemes that you can create with Christmas decorations...
Are you tired of the same-ol', same-ol' Christmas decorating routine?
This year, why not come up with a whole new theme for your seasonal decorations? If you start with your Christmas ornaments, you can build the rest of the theme around them... and spread it throughout your house.
Here are seven unique themes to consider -- and Christmas decorations and ornaments are available for all of them.
Christmas Decorations Theme #1: Victorian
Are you a Dickens fan? If you like satin and lace and antique-looking Christmas ornaments, make the Victorian era your theme. Click here for more information on how to create 19th century Christmas ornaments.
Christmas Decorations Theme #2: Christian or other religious
Want to stick to the traditional theme... with Christmas ornaments to match? Check out our favorite sources for ornaments at the end of this article -- for some wonderful basic collectible ornaments -- from Nativity scenes to crosses.
Christmas Decorations Theme #3: Winter/snow
If you want a traditional theme without the religious connotations, the whole realm of 'winter' offers endless possibilities: snowmen, snowflakes, stars in the sky, falling snow and cozy little cabins in the woods with lanterns burning -- and these kinds of Christmas ornaments are readily available, including from the sources below.
Christmas Decorations Theme #4: By color
Certain colors have long been associated with Christmas (green and red, silver and gold, for example).
You can create a dazzling theme based simply on color. While one family member's home is almost always decorated in blue, white and silver at Christmas time (see theme #3 above to guess what Christmas ornaments they have on hand), another family member prefers gold and red. Their Christmas ornaments lean toward the Victorian theme (see theme #1).
Christmas Decorations Theme #5: Nautical
Would you rather be sailing? Look for Christmas ornaments in a nautical theme -- from lighthouses to beach glass to leaping dolphins, you can find some nautical-themed Christmas ornaments here.
Christmas Decorations Theme #6: Plants
Poinsettia, Xmas Cactus, Evergreens, Holly -- why not 'go green' with a Christmas plant theme this year?
Plants were historically used in winter festivities to ensure that life and growth would return again in the spring. Most Christmas-related plants were Christmas ornaments in the 'pagan' midwinter feasts of Northern Europe, pre-dating modern religious customs.
You can check out our article on Gift Idea: Beautiful and Unusual Plants for ideas for plants to use.
Christmas Decorations Theme #7: By culture
Every culture has seasonal traditions, and you could incorporate any of them as a theme. For example, a Hawaiian Christmas would make use of completely different Christmas decorations and ornaments than an African Christmas.
Some great sources for Christmas decorations and ornaments are: The Lighter Side (just click on Christmas on the left nav bar) and Go Collect.
For a whole new look this Christmas, start with themed Christmas decorations and ornaments, and Christmas decorating for the whole house will be much easier.
